Only 12 books this month, but I may have forgotten some, did not keep this list updated well. But school is almost out, yay. I was cut because of budget cuts again, so am back looking for another teaching position. I had a lot of fun this year and learned a lot though so am glad that I had this position. It should also be easier to get a job with more experience. I taught music for 4 years but an also certified in math, but it is hard to get a math job with no math teaching experience. So after this year I actually have that so hopefully that will help with finding another job. Wish me luck. :)
On a more fun note, I got a $50 Kindle giftcard and went crazy shopping, so much fun, bought lots!

Dragon's Heir review

7/26/2009 06:52:00 PM / Posted by Kris / comments (1)

Forgot to add this to my June list. But how do you count this? it is a collection of 6 novellas I guess it would just count as one really long book. I posted about this book a while ago for Ms Dafoe and wonderfully enough I ended up winning a copy, yay!

The novellas in this collection are:
The Dragon's Daughter
Dragon's Heir
Dragon's Desire
Dravidian
The Dragon Prince
Double Dragon

Djarera. The dragon planet. A world of passion and politics where the Southerlins, hereditary rulers of the dragon kingdom, struggle to maintain peace among the hot-blooded clans…
For decades, the two most powerful dragon clans have been at each other’s throats over one very important question: who will get to marry the Dragon Queen’s daughter? Determined to end their feuding, Melgara sends the two young princes to Earth where her daughter has grown up in hiding, ignorant of who she is.
But when two sexy, shapeshifting dragons start vying for her affections, Lara Southerlin finds herself in a wholly unexpected predicament. On the one hand there’s Darrek Hausther, dangerous and dominant and darkly handsome. On the other, there’s the red-headed Rand Aurorea, strong and sweet-tempered and willing to defend her to the death. The one who wins Lara’s heart will be heir to the throne -- while the other will be banished forever.
Or will he? With the appearance of the charismatic rebel Zendar, life becomes even more complicated. And when Melgara herself goes unexpectedly into khef, the dragon mating frenzy, a new contender for the throne arises, threatening the survival of all four clans.

This first four novellas are about Lara, the Queen's Daughter and the last two are about Lara's brother. I will say that if you do not like mm scenes then do not get this book, the family seems to have a knack of getting men to sleep with men.
I have a hard time saying anything else about the storyline because if I talk about anything other than the first story, it givesaway what happens in the first story. The book starts out with two dragon shifter men from rival Djarera families, Derrek and Hausther, going to Earth to try to claim Lara. Whoever wins her will be the Consort to the next ruler of their people.

The last two stories are about Lara's brother, Kevan. Since these are kind of separate and happen like 18 years after the first four, I can tell you how these start. Kevan knows that he is different than his mother expects. Now that he is of age, he is expected to pick a wife and have an heir. But he has a problem, he does not like girls, he wants a man of his own. So to get away from the pressure he goes to Earth and ends up meeting Cal at a club who he is instantly attracted to (who also looks just like him, is this a case of narcisism?). But now what is he going to do, he is still expected to produce an heir. Are you seeing where this is going with the identical not-twin thing?

My biggest issue with this book was how easily the Earthlings (? for lack of a better word) accepted the shifters. They shifted to dragons in front of her and she accepted that way too easily. I thought it was ironic how it ended with that group. Then later with Lara's brother when he shifted in front of his Earthling, it was accepted awfully quickly.
My only other issue was the love at first sight thing. Which with them all being short stories originally separate, I know that it moves the story along quicker to the love scenes and the rest of the story if they fall in love on sight, but that has never been a favorite theme of mine because I like watching the relationship develop to love. Lust at first sight I can understand, but love at first sight, I do not.

I enjoyed the stories, even with my issues and the love scenes were very, very hot. This was a good collection. Six stories about 400 pages for a good price. Here is the Changeling Press site for it if you are interested.

Kiss of Fire

2/24/2008 05:22:00 PM / Posted by Kris / comments (5)

Well, the goal this week is to purge my drafts in my posts. I have about 8 books that I have started posts for but have not finished and posted. I went to the docs on Thursday and got the hear the heartbeat again. They are making an appointment for an ultrasound for me so I can find out what I am having (if the baby cooperates). Gotta go, off to do more laundry, yuck. Hope everyone has a great week.

Kiss of Fire (Dragonfire, Book 1)Kiss of Fire (Dragonfire Book 1) by Deborah Cooke
For millennia, the shape-shifting dragon warriors known as the Pyr have commanded the four elements and guarded the earth's treasures. But now the final reckoning between the Pyr, who count humans among the earth's treasures, and the Slayers, who would eradicate both humans and the Pyr who protect them, is about to begin...
When Sara Keegan decides to settle down and run her quirky aunt's New Age bookstore, she's not looking for adventure. She doesn't believe in fate or the magic of the tarot-but when she's saved from a vicious attack by a man who has the ability to turn into a fire-breathing dragon, she questions whether she's losing her mind-or about to lose her heart...
Quinn Tyrrell has long been distrustful of his fellow Pyr and a self-reliant loner. So when he feels the firestorm that signals his destined mate, he's determined to protect and possess Sara, regardless of the cost to himself. Then Sara's true destiny is revealed-and Quinn realizes he must risk everything- even Sara's love-to fulfill their entwined fates...

I will admit the reason I was so interested in reading this book initially was the cover. THe book was very good, I enjoyed it a lot.

Maiden Flight

2/15/2008 06:48:00 PM / Posted by Kris / comments (3)

Random rant
I bought Lorelei James's new book (print version), Long Hard Ride today and got to page 33 and was abruptly shifted into Hara's Legacy by Bianca D'Arc. I like that story but it is not the one I wanted to read. I skipped ahead to see if maybe the pages were just inserted (which has happened to me before too) Which would be no big deal, you skip the pages and keep reading. But no such luck, does not come back to the story until page 96. I emailed Samhain and I will call my bookstore in the morning.
This one top of a very long day at school. I had a child make a racial slur to another child about her parents and it just made me so mad.
Well, I am going to go start another book and hopefully this one will be okay :)

PS. Chantal, Nath and Ames have started a blog together to review books and hang out. Check it out, it is called Breezing Through.

Maiden FlightMaiden Flight (Dragon Knights Book 1) by Bianca D'Arc
War is coming for the knights, dragons and a damsel who is not quite in distress, but finds her heart's desire in the strong men of the Border Lair.
A chance meeting with a young male dragon seals the fate of one adventurous female poacher. The dragon's partner, a ruggedly handsome knight named Gareth, takes one look at the shapely poacher and decides to do a little poaching of his own. Sir Gareth not only seduces her, but falls deeply in love with the girl who is not only unafraid of dragons, but able to hear their silent speech, which is a rarity. He wants her for his mate, but mating with a knight is no simple thing. To accept a knight, a woman must also accept the dragon, the dragon's mate… and her knight too.
She is at first shocked, then enticed by the lusty life in the Lair. War is in the making and only the knights and dragons have a chance at ending it before it destroys their land and their lives. But there's nothing a knight enjoys more than a noble quest and winning the heart and trust of a maiden is the noblest quest of all.

I won this from Bianca D'Arc and enjoyed it a lot. It is the first of her Dragon Knight books, she currently has five. This one and the second one have been released in print as one volume, as have the third and fourth books. This truly is one of a series. You get the HEA but the storyline is no where near done yet. The majority if not all of the books in this series I think are menage because of the nature of the world she has set up.

Dragon Heat and Black Dragon

12/18/2007 06:51:00 PM / Posted by Kris / comments (0)

Well sorry it has been a while, this week has been insane and it is spreading into the week as well. I have my first prego check up on Friday. Zeek is having a contest on her page giving away some cool books, stop on by. I have other books I want to write about but have not had time to post them yet, hopefully soon. But here are two that I just finished that I really enjoyed. These two books are best read in order.

Dragon Heat (Dragon Series, Book 1) Dragon Heat (Dragon series book 1) by Allyson James
Lisa Singleton has an unusual roommate-a fifty-foot dragon named Caleb who has glittering scales and a bad attitude. Little does she know that Caleb is actually a powerful warrior sent to protect her from those out to steal her magic and destroy the world. Or that Caleb can take the human form of a sexy hunk. Now, if he doesn't stop distracting her with those gorgeous bedroom eyes, they may not have time to stop their enemies before all of existence is wiped out. At least Lisa and Caleb will have savored every last minute.

The Black Dragon (Dragon Series, Book 2) The Black Dragon (Dragon series book 2) by Allyson James
When Saba Watanabe is attacked by white dragons in human form on the streets of San Francisco, the only man she can turn to for help is the dangerously seductive Malcolm, a black dragon who once made Saba his love slave. But it's Saba who must use her rising powers to save Malcolm-and all of his kind.

I really liked both books. But probably I liked the second one more, I think it is the whole bad boy thing. Because in the first book he is the "bad guy" and in the second he is the hero. I love books like that. The first book is a nice story but I liked the storyline of the second one better and you are building relationships with the characters because they all appear in the first book and then again in the second. But very good books.

Master of Dragons

6/13/2007 11:33:00 AM / Posted by Kris / comments (1)

Master of Dragons (Mageverse Book 8) by Anglea Knight
Good book. I got into it a lot easier than the last book and I enjoyed it more. I love this series. You did not get the whole vampire and witch match going, but you got a nice sidhe and dragon thing going. I am getting a nice appreciation for dragon heros. This was a great installment for the series and carried the storyline nicely.

NOTE: in the back of the book, it said she had a new book coming out called Warlord and I was excited until I read the rest and it said it was a release of Jane's Warlord and her novella Warfem (in the Kick @$$ anthology) in one book.

I do not like the description on the back of the book and I cannot find it to copy anyway so I am going to write my own summary.

Sidhe princess, Nineva Morrow has been in hiding all of her life on Earth. She has been on the run since Ansgar's soldier's killed her parents 12 years ago. Nineva is the Avatar of Semira, fated to save Semira from her imprisonment but now there is a rebellion that has formed and is trying to use her to their advantage. Her only hope is the dragon, Kel, now a knight but who had trapped for centuries in a sword and has been cutting a swath through the witches of Mageverse to make up for lost time. He has been sent by the god, Cachamwri, to help her. Now the Dark Ones are coming and the future is uncertain.
