The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie (Highland Pleasures Book 1) by Jennifer Ashley (A)
The year is 1881. Meet the Mackenzie family--rich, powerful, dangerous, eccentric. A lady couldn't be seen with them without ruin. Rumors surround them--of tragic violence, of their mistresses, of their dark appetites, of scandals that set England and Scotland abuzz.
The youngest brother, Ian, known as the Mad Mackenzie, spent most of his young life in an asylum, and everyone agrees he is decidedly odd. He's also hard and handsome and has a penchant for Ming pottery and beautiful women.
Beth Ackerley, widow, has recently come into a fortune. She has decided that she wants no more drama in her life. She was raised in drama--an alcoholic father who drove them into the workhouse, a frail mother she had to nurse until her death, a fussy old lady she became constant companion to. No, she wants to take her money and find peace, to travel, to learn art, to sit back and fondly remember her brief but happy marriage to her late husband.
And then Ian Mackenzie decides he wants her.

At our first FL blogger meeting, Jill and I were talking as we were shopping and were discussing Jennifer Ashley's newest release because we both had it. Then she asked if I had read this book, I hadn't. She told me it was one of her favorites from 2009 so I had to go find it. My library had it so I grabbed it. I read it in one day. I am not a big historical reader as I prefer contemporaries and paranormals. I am very glad that I picked this up.

Lord Ian is a unique hero, and I loved that. For me he made the book. I loved his cluelessness. He was basically a historical nerd. He has an eidetic memory which means that he remembers everything he sees and hears. (Like Dr. Spencer Reid on Criminal Minds)
The story starts with Beth Ackerly being engaged to a nasty man named Mather. Ian warns her about Mather's predilictions and then proposes to her. Beth refuses but also breaks things off with Mather.
Beth is a strong heroine. She was raised in the slums but met a nice lady who hired her and then left Beth her wealthy estate when she died. She is an interesting blend of strength and naivete. Because of that naivete and optimism she does have one or two TSTL moments but I still liked her.
Ian, because of his memory, lack of social understanding and a couple of other things was put into an asylum when he was a child. His brother got him released years later after their father's death. But he is still labeled by most as "mad" because of his mannerisms and difficulty focusing on what is going on. I loved his character. It was such a nice change from the usual rakish characters in historicals.

Loved this book, I give it an A. Thanks Jill for the recommendation :)

Here is Jill's review as well.

Sexy Nerds

8/10/2009 08:29:00 PM / Posted by Kris / comments (2)

One of my absolute favorite hero archetypes is the sexy nerd. I married one and some of my favorite books have nerd heros. But I have not read a good nerd hero story in a while and when I was reading the Liquid Silver Newsletter I was reminded of them from this article by Michelle Lauren.

Hot Hero Archetype: The Sexy Nerd
Once upon a time, the heroes I read about in mainstream romance novels fell into two categories: The Playboy or the Jock. Nerds were either sidekicks or impotent foils to the hero. They generally weren’t considered “leading man” material, in fiction or in film. However, in 1987 something happened to change my mind.
Two words: Patrick. Dempsey (a.k.a. McDreamy).
In Can’t Buy Me Love, Dempsey plays Ronald Miller, a high school student obsessed with astronomy and with winning the heart of the most popular girl at school. After seeing him in his infamous car washing scene I knew I had to rethink my opinion of nerds.
That was the day that “geek” took a new meaning to me: sexy. So, why exactly are nerds sexy? Let me count the ways.

Top Four Reasons Why Nerds Are Sexy:

1. They have great imaginations.

Lewis from Revenge of the Nerds said it best: [After making out with his sorority girl crush Betty] “Jocks only think about sports; nerds only think about sex.” Combine this with the fact that many “nerds” are quick learners, and you have the perfect recipe for passion.

2. They might secretly be superheroes.

Think about it. Peter Parker, Clark Kent, Bruce Banner, Hiro Nakamura – all nerds. Coincidence? I think not.

Okay. So in real life, this doesn’treally apply. However, in fiction this possibility opens up the door to unique plot twists and character development.

3. They have better sperm.

Seriously. A 1985 study conducted by researchers led them to the conclusion that “brainy men do have better sperm.” This study was later referenced in a December 2008 paper by London scientists whose findings concluded what I’ve known all along: intelligence is sexy.

4. Intelligence.

Romance depends on more than animal attraction. A true “happily ever after” relies on the hero’s ability to connect with the heroine on an emotional and intellectual level.
Happy Reading!

Now can anyone give me some recommendations of good nerd heros. I need to get a nerd fix and my hubby is out of town.

Dancing With Fire
Dancing with Fire by Susan Kearney

Accident or Murder? Dance instructor Kaylin Danner has sacrificed her chance to be a Broadway star to help her father raise her younger sisters in Florida. When her father's laboratory blows sky high and his priceless formula for a revolutionary new fuel disappears, Kaylin is left with nothing but her father's business partner Sawyer Scott and a cache of deadly trouble.

Life or Death? When the Danner family home is vandalized and her sisters are threatened, Kaylin and Sawyer team up to unmask the killer terrorizing her family. Sawyer's bent on pursuing both Kaylin and the missing formula, but Kaylin fights the attraction, believing Sawyer's a dreamer like her father--and in her experience, dreamers end up dead.

I love the nerd hero!! This one was no exception. Good story.

My Nerdy Valentine

My Nerdy Valentine
My Nerdy Valentine by Vicki Lewis Thompson

This was a cute book, but not my favorite in the "nerd series" (they are not connected so do not need to be read in order). I liked some of the other books better. I read it and finished it, but it is not one that i think I will re-read a lot if at all. Not a keeper for me, though I probably will keep it just because I have the rest of them. I hope others have a better time with it.

Amanda Rykowsky, psychology student, bartender, and intern to a sex therapist, meets nerdy stockbroker William Sloan when the bag of sex toys she has picked up for the therapist breaks and scatters embarrassing items all over the stairs. With no time for dating, Amanda has sworn off relationships. When she starts receiving progressively more alarming valentines from an unknown admirer, Will worries that a dangerous stalker is the culprit. He offers to pretend to be Amanda's boyfriend, but they can't keep their hands off each other and experience blazing sex. Delightfully busybody neighbors and kinky patients with hilarious peccadilloes add to the entertainment. (summary from Booklist by Diana Tixier Herald Copyright © American Library Association. Sleeping with Beauty

Sleeping with Beauty (Bantam Book) Sleeping with Beauty by Donna Kauffman

Great book, one of my favorites of the Glass Slipper, Inc. books (Cinderella Rules, Dear Prince Charming, this one and then Not So Snow White (haven't read yet)). It is a nerd book and I LOVE nerd books, I think they make some of the best characters. Okay, here is the description:

At twenty-eight, elementary-school teacher Lucy Harper still feels more like a wallflower than the sex goddess she knows is trapped inside her. In fact, she can barely remember the last time she actually had sex. She claims she’s content with her life, but she doesn’t even realize she’s slipping into a coma–a sex coma, that is. Until It arrives: the invitation to her ten-year high school reunion.
Lucy’s childhood pals Jana and Grady are baffled by her decision to attend. But they’ve managed to put geek-hood behind them. This may be Lucy’s last chance to lose her loser reputation and knock her ex-classmates’ socks off–thanks to the modern-day fairy godmothers at Glass Slipper, Inc. For a not-so-small fee, they promise to bring out the princess in any woman. If only Lucy’s friends were more supportive, especially Grady. After all, he loves her like a sister. Doesn’t he?
Soon Lucy is under the scrutiny of eccentric self-made diva Vivian dePalma. And the diagnosis is dour: Lucy has slipped into the final stage of Sleeping Beauty Syndrome–meaning her love life is near death. Can Vivian rouse her in time for the reunion? And will a kiss from her teen crush really be enough to awaken her? For Lucy hasn’t quite opened her eyes to one important truth: the soul mate she’s been dreaming of has never left her side.

Dangerous Tides

Dangerous Tides by Christine Feehan

This book reminded me why I like nerd heroes. I have missed reading about them. This is the 4th book in the Drake sisters series. The other in the series are Magic in the Wind in the Fantasy Lover anthology, Twilight Before Christmas and Oceans of Fire. The series is about seven sisters who have genetically acquired powers to use to help others and protect themselves. The youngest sister is the sister who will produce the next generation of sisters. The series goes in order of the sisters the oldest first and on down, because that is the prophesy about the sisters, they find their true loves in order.

This story is about Dr. Libby Drake, who is a doctor and perpetually sweet, even though she really wants to be a bad girl. She is the object of the desires of her fellow doctor, Dr. Tyson Derrick, though he won't admit it yet. He thinks that she is in a family of charletans and is making herself sick trying to heal people she cannot possibly heal. But someone is trying to hurt Libby and Tyson and they don't know who or why.

High Intensity

High Intensity
WHAT IS HIGH INTENSITY? Silken Caresses. Steak bomb sandwiches. A hot press of lips. A haunted chef. Seductive touches in the dark. Spirits who gobble the haute cuisine. A master strategist. A miscreant ghost. And a very, very fat cat. Join the most sizzling, provocative physicist to ever solve a case or heat up a bedroom and his equally passionate partner as they investigate the perfect equation for love! Tyber and Zanita invite you to come along for their madcap, sensual journey into high intensity . . .

High Intensity by Dara Joy is the sequel to High Energy. It, like the first was very entertaining. It is the continued story of Tyber and Zanita as he tries to get her to set a date for their wedding. I loved the colorful characters of the book. They cracked me up. It is nice to see a hero interact with a heroine who keeps him guessing and not be condescending to her. He loves how her mind works and it never fails to surprise him. They have a great chemistry and I loved it. I will definitely have to track this down at my local ubs.

High Energy

High Energy
Zanita Masterson quickly overcomes her lack of interest in science when a reporting assignment leads her to Tyberius Augustus Evans, a blue-eyed, brawny professor with a winning formula for romance.

I read an oldy yesterday High Energy by Dara Joy. My library has the second one the series, High Intensity, but not the first. I happened to pick up a copy at a used bookstore and finally read it (so now I can read the next one). It was interesting. It ws fun to follow the hero's thoughts and verbage. He is a physics guru, whose name is Tyberius, and enjoys being with the heroine, Zanita, who is so non-linear and quirky he never knows what she is going to do next. It reminds me of me and my hubby, I tried to explain my thought process to him one day and he asked me never to do that again because I just confused him more. I enjoyed this book a lot because I could picture my hubby and I having some of the same conversations. It was a fun (and steamy) read.
